It seems that while older versions of WhatsApp can be downloaded and installed, when activated, the program automatically looks for the latest update and there's no way to stop it doing that. Got the solution to stop the program from updating automatically when it opens ! You have to go to system preferences then software update, then Advanced and uncheck the checkbox check for updates. You can now download an older version of whatsapp and when you install it it will no longer automatically download the update.
