Nintendo showed off big upcoming titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and even the long rumored 2D action game known as Metroid Dread . As exciting and surprising as the new Metroid was, it likely wasn't the announcement many expected. The rough development cycle of Metroid Prime 4 is well documented, having not only switched developers, but getting a full reboot as well. However, that announcement was made all the way back in early 2

In Skyrim , players could manipulate items to decorate their homes in extreme detail. They could sit in any chair at any inn and listen to a bard play music, and they could zoom out and see themselves as part of a scene. They could even famously put buckets over the heads of shopkeeper NPCs in order to break the character's line of sight, letting them steal as many items from the store as they could ca

However, this also comes with a cost. Avowed will need to go above and beyond Skyrim if it's going to set a new standard for the genre on the new generation of consoles . Avowed will also need to include the small details that help bring the worlds of The Elder Scrolls games to l

When Avowed was revealed last year, fans of both Obsidian and Bethesda were quick to notice the similarities between the upcoming RPG and The Elder Scrolls games. Not only that, but Obsidian had already revealed more about its upcoming project than Bethesda has revealed about The Elder Scrolls 6 since its announcement in 2018. Many concluded that, as with The Outer Worlds and Fallout , Obsidian was developing another first-person RPG to attract Bethesda fans who felt dissatisfied with the studio's recent releases, or lack ther

This could require Obsidian to make some updates to its engine during the development of Avowed . That being said, the studio can't hope to take on The Elder Scrolls series without first understanding some of the smaller elements that helped bring its huge success. Avowed may be a continuation of Pillars of Eternity , but many fantasy fans buying the game will be hoping for a spiritual successor to Skyrim . If Obsidian is going to take on a giant, the devil will be in the deta

Companion characters aren’t the only likely difference between Skyrim and Avowed . Based on other Obsidian RPGs , it’s more likely that Avowed will have a greater focus on its main quest than Skyrim does, and despite its open world, Obsidian’s past games suggest that it’s more likely that Avowed will block off its world after the main quest is completed, though this is far from cert

In this sense, the Living Lands have a chance to intensely reflect the entirety of Eora , t he name of the world first established in Pillars of Eternity . The Living Lands are described as a "lawless land" where different communities are constantly at odds with one another that result in petty armed conflicts. That constantly changing composition of the setting's inhabitants, however, shouldn’t undermine the opportunity for the Living Lands to reflect the intensely different cultures from across E

The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced back in 2018, but since then Bethesda has released little news about the game. Though TES6 ’s release date remains unannounced, it has been confirmed that the game will not release until after Starfield , the studio’s new IP. Elder Scrolls fans who are hoping that Avowed will tide them over may find one key difference between The Elder Scrolls and Obsidian’s RPG design tho

If Avowed ends up having a particularly innovative combat system that rivals The Elder Scrolls ' simple combat system, for example, there's nothing to stop The Elder Scrolls 6 integrating similar mechanics. If an aspect of Avowed is met with criticism, The Elder Scrolls 6 can attempt to avoid similar criticism in advance. With most predictions placing Avowed 's release at some point in the next couple of years, and The Elder Scrolls 6 's release date potentially around 2025 or 2026, Bethesda could have several years to learn from Avowed 's successes and mista

Though it sometimes leads to silly outcomes, Bethesda's physics engine allows for the kind of small details that make its open worlds feel extra immersive. BioWare RPGs draw players in with a strong central narrative, but not games like The Elder Scrolls . Many open-world RPGs rely on the player immersing themselves in the world by making their own character, creating their own backstory, and setting their own goals. This reliance on the player to immerse themselves in the game makes these kinds of details hugely impactful, and for all its merits, The Outer Worlds proved comparatively poorer without t

Although contentious in the past, the unique history between Obsidian and Bethesda now presents and opportunity for both studios. Obsidian has the chance to draw disaffected or increasingly impatient Bethesda fans to its smaller-budget first-person RPG projects like The Outer Worlds and Avowed Weapons . Bethesda, on the other hand, has the opportunity to look at Avowed when it releases __ for a clear example of the RPG formula Bethesda uses being executed on current-generation hardware. Without Avowed , the last major first-person fantasy RPG for Bethesda to look back on would be Skyrim itself, a game just months away from its ten-year annivers
