The Outer Worlds saw Obsidian Entertainment dive into the world of first-person RPGs for the first time since Fallout: New Vegas released back in 2010. Many fans of the developer saw the release of a first-person satirical sci-fi game as a direct aim at Bethesda and Fallout 's spot in the RPG market. With Obsidian's first-person fantasy game Avowed crafting Guide on the way, many now see the studio making a similar move to fulfill the desire Bethesda fans have for a new Elder Scrolls g

imageThough it sometimes leads to silly outcomes, Bethesda's physics engine allows for the kind of small details that make its open worlds feel extra immersive. BioWare RPGs draw players in with a strong central narrative, but not games like The Elder Scrolls . Many open-world RPGs rely on the player immersing themselves in the world by making their own character, creating their own backstory, and setting their own goals. This reliance on the player to immerse themselves in the game makes these kinds of details hugely impactful, and for all its merits, The Outer Worlds proved comparatively poorer without t

Grounded stands out among the list of current projects at Obsidian Entertainment, as it has technically already been released but just in Early Access. It's a survival RPG where players embody a person who has been shrunk and must survive the terror of creatures like bees and spiders in a backyard. Grounded is in early access and has already seen several updates with new content, and this looks set to continue for some time. The unique game has resonated well with gamers and critics alike and will likely be a big focus for Obsidian going forward until and probably after it has received a full rele

Skyrim ’s followers are relatively barebones, even for a game released in 2011. Compared to 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas , Skyrim has far more characters who can be recruited as followers, but with far fewer unique lines, quests, and with next to no engagement with Skyrim ’s main story or any other major questlines. Even the recruitable followers with the most story like Aela the Huntress or Cicero have stories which are completely independent of their journeys with the pla

Avowed is Obsidian Entertainment's next first-person RPG. It picks up the setting from the Pillars of Eternity games but with a new, first-person perspective akin to The Outer Worlds or Fallout: New Veg

It could be possible for Avowed to find a compromise between the class system found in more traditional RPGs and more accessible ones. Class choice could give the player certain abilities at the start of the game which other classes would have to unlock later, for example, as well as affecting their attack power with certain weapons and spells. Some lighter class systems like this can be found in games like Dark Souls , where classes affect how the player starts the game but doesn't stop them from redirecting their specialties as they play m

With Benny, the player might pursue revenge or simply avoid him, but in both cases it feels far more like a personal, in-universe decision rather than the player just following the plot's demands. The main character in Avowed needs the option to ignore the main quest, and should be positively motivated to do it, not negatively. This may not need to be the case for all RPGs, but Obsidian has shown before that it works particularly well with the open-world RPG form

In some ways Skyrim ’s lack of follower depth complements the game’s broader design. Skyrim prioritizes freedom above all else, and the range and flexibility of its follower characters allows them to blend in no matter who the player wants to roleplay as, while in New Vegas characters like Boone are incompatible with roleplaying decisions like joining the Legion for story reasons. Without its focus on player freedom it’s unlikely that the game would have achieved the replay-value or longevity Skyrim has enjoyed, even as the game approaches its 10-year anniversary. Based on Obsidian’s past games, however, it’s unlikely that Avowed ’s companion characters will follow Skyrim ’s freedom-focused des

There have been no hints as to what this project is, but it's not hard to imagine Josh Sawyer returning to the Pillars of Eternity series in light of Avowed. Additionally, The Outer Worlds is a successful new IP for the company, so it would make sense for Obsidian to follow it up at some point down the line. Perhaps the most popular and sought-after theory is that Obsidian is making Fallout: New Vegas 2 , which has been rumored ever since Microsoft began its Bethesda acquisit

Obsidian originally found success with its first game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords in 2004. The developer was founded by former members of Black Isle Studios who already had a wealth of experience in developing RPGs, having worked on series such as Icewind Dale and Fallout. To this day, the developer has mostly kept its projects within its RPG roots, but it has experimented with other genres and styles of role-playing experiences over the years. Its current slate of games represents a mixture of its role-playing expertise and some new directions for the comp
